In operation since 2014, MarketPlace has delivered more than 4 million pounds of free food. The program started as an initiative to provide food to residents living within our residential housing communities but has since grown to impact rural areas throughout the state of South Carolina. Initially, boxes of food were delivered from out of the back of a staff member’s station wagon but has now grown into a fleet of 6 refrigerated trucks. Our most recent addition pictured. Five years ago, Humanities Foundation recognized that food insecurity was a growing problem in the Tri-County, particularly in area called by the FDA as “food deserts”. Food deserts are lacking large retail grocery stores or nearby farmers’ markets. The new addition to the fleet will further our mission and enhance our capacity and capability to safely transport both refrigerated and frozen food product directly to individuals in need.
